You've spent weeks planning the perfect baby shower — the flowers, the games, the cake. The last thing you want is a photographer making it feel stiff or staged.
Here's exactly what it's like when I shoot a baby shower, and why so many of my Long Island and NYC clients say they barely noticed I was there.
I arrive early — and I get to work immediately
I always arrive 20–30 minutes before guests do. That's when I photograph the details: the table settings, the florals, the little personal touches someone spent hours putting together. The diaper cake. The custom signage. The tiny onesies laid out on display.These detail shots set the scene and tell the full story of the day. By the time guests arrive, I've already captured the stage — and I'm ready for the main event.
Candid first, posed second
My style is documentary. That means I'm not rounding everyone up for group shots every 20 minutes. I move through the room quietly, capturing real moments as they happen — the mom-to-be tearing up over a heartfelt gift, grandma holding up the tiny shoes, best friends laughing over the baby name guessing game.
Those are the photos you'll look back on and feel everything all over again.
That said, I always make time for a few intentional portraits — the guest of honor with her partner, with her mom, with her closest friends. We just keep it relaxed and natural, never forced.
Gift opening is pure gold to photograph
Every reaction is real. Every gasp and laugh is unscripted. I position myself to capture both the mom-to-be's face and the room reacting — and those images are almost always the ones clients love most. The tiny outfits held up. The overwhelmed happy tears. The friends who've been waiting to spoil this baby for months. It's genuinely one of my favorite things to document.
What you don't need to do
You don't need to coordinate with me. You don't need to tell me where to stand or what to shoot. You don't need to pause the party for photos.
Just enjoy your day. I'll handle the rest.
A few things that help the photos shine
While you don't need to do anything differently, a few small details can make a big difference:
Natural light is your best friend. If you have a venue with good windows, try to seat the bride near them for gift opening.
A clean backdrop for portraits matters more than people realize. A blank wall, a floral installation, or a garden area gives us a spot for a quick, beautiful portrait without hunting for one mid-party.
Let your host know I'm coming early so the setup is mostly done when I arrive. The more complete the space looks, the better the detail shots.
What you'll receive
After your baby shower, you'll receive a fully edited online gallery — typically within two weeks. Galleries include candid moments, detail shots, portraits, and everything in between. You'll be able to download, share, and print directly from the gallery.
